Can a factory be renovated into a house where you can live in?

The factory, located just outside of Barcelona, was a WWI-era pollution machine that had closed down and came with many repairs to be done when Ricardo Bofill and his team purchased it. After years of partial deconstruction, the determined architect proceeded to renovate the house exterior of the property. The home renovating was made with vegetation and furnishing the interior as a modern living and work space.

Will we see more renovations inside Bofill house?

La Fabrica is a work in progress to this day, to which Bofill likens his own life. His renovations of the house continue to change shape. The industrial chimneys that once filled the air with smoke now overflow with lush greenery. This is an example of the beautiful house renovation that results in creative thinking.

The existing structures largely influenced the design of the interior and the industrial feel was retained wherever possible. The rooms are flooded with natural light from the tall ceilings and large windows. “The factory is a magic place which strange atmosphere is difficult to be perceived by a profane eye. “I like the life to be in total contrast with my nomad life,” said Bofill. His firm says the project “will always remain an unfinished work”.

Every room is treated like a work of art, with carefully selected furnishings that allude to the site’s history. “I have the impression of living in a precinct,” said Bofill. “The Cement Factory is a place of work. Life goes on here in a continuous sequence, with very little difference between work and leisure.”
